In the Sabon Birni council area of Sokoto, two soldiers were killed and seven others injured in a bandit raid on Unguwar Lalle village.
They also burned down two police and army patrol vehicles.
We learned that the bandits attacked the village around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
“They came on 100 motorcycles; each motorcycle carried three well-armed bandits,” a witness reported.
They attacked soldiers manning a checkpoint along Sokoto-Sabon Birni road from the Tilibale axis.
“The soldiers also responded, but were overpowered by the bandits,” the source said.
Three operational vehicles with reinforcements left Sabon Birni town. However, they were ambushed on the way, resulting in two soldiers being killed and seven others suffering varying degrees of injuries.
“As I speak to you, the whole Unguwar Lalle and surroundings are deserted for fear of another attack,” he said.
Bandits looted shops in the area and rustled livestock, according to the report.
Several residents, including staff from the hospital, were also allegedly kidnapped by the bandits.
Brig-Gen Onyeoku, spokesman for the Nigerian Army, said he was not briefed about the development.
The Police Public Relation Officer, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
