The mayor of Bucha, a Ukrainian town near Kyiv, claimed on Tuesday that police had discovered 403 remains of individuals slain by Russian soldiers during their siege of the area, but that the number was climbing.
After Russian military departed late last month, Anatoliy Fedoruk stated during a briefing that it was too early for people to return to the town.
Fedoruk’s remarks on the number of individuals discovered dead in Bucha were not immediately verified by Shauntv. Reuters has seen the corpses of five victims who were shot in the head in Bucha, but has been unable to establish who was guilty on its own.
Moscow, which has denied targeting civilians since invading Ukraine on February 24, has branded accusations that Russian soldiers massacred residents in Bucha as a “monstrous fake” intended to discredit the Russian army.
