Ukraine has begun receiving Harpoon anti-ship missiles from Denmark and self-propelled howitzers from the United States, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov announced on Saturday, noting that the armaments will strengthen soldiers resisting Russia’s incursion.

“Not only will Harpoon missiles bolster our country’s coastline defence, but skilled Ukrainian teams will operate them,” Reznikov stated on his Facebook page.

He stated that Harpoon ship-to-shore missiles would be used alongside Ukrainian Neptune missiles to defend the country’s coastline, especially the southern port of Odessa.

After commencing its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia placed a naval blockade on Ukrainian ports, so impeding the export of crucial grains.

It has also utilised its Black Sea fleet to launch missile attacks against Ukraine, which has now begun receiving military backing from the West.

Reznikov stated that the shipments of Harpoon missiles were the result of international cooperation, stating that the shipments from Denmark occurred “with the participation of our British friends.”

Reznikov stated that Ukraine had also received a variety of heavy weaponry, including modified M109 self-propelled howitzers manufactured in the United States, which will enable the Ukrainian military to strike targets from greater distances.

A senior U.S. defence official stated last month that the U.S. military had begun training a small number of Ukrainian forces in the use of howitzer artillery, adding that the instruction was taking place outside of Ukraine.

Ukraine has expressed a desire to acquire U.S.-made M270 long-range multiple rocket launchers (MLRS) for use in repelling Russian forces in the country’s east.

Harpoon is an all-weather, over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile that employs active radar homing and evades defences by flying just above the water. It is capable of being launched from ships, submarines, aeroplanes, and coastal batteries.

Russia asserts that its soldiers are conducting a special operation to demilitarise Ukraine and purge the country of anti-Russian nationalist extremists. Ukraine and its allies consider this to be a false excuse to invade on February 24.
