Moscow has not taken control of any of Ukraine’s ten largest cities since the start of its incursion on February 24, the most serious strike on a European state since World War II.

According to US authorities, it is conducting a “special military operation” to “denazify” the country and has requested military and economic assistance from Beijing.

Moscow rejects this, claiming that it has enough resources to achieve all of its objectives. The reports regarding aid were labelled as “disinformation” by China’s foreign ministry.

As national security advisor Jake Sullivan met with China’s senior diplomat Yang Jiechi in Rome, China signalled its willingness to give help to Russia, according to a US official.

“We have made it very clear to Beijing that we will not stand by,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Monday. “No country will be allowed to recompense Russia for its losses.”

According to a US official, the seven-hour discussion was “intense” and represented “the severity of the occasion.”

The West is debating how to deal with any involvement from China, the world’s largest exporter and the number one foreign supplier of goods to Americans.

In Russia, a rare anti-war demonstration took place in a studio during the major news show on state television’s Channel One, which is the primary source of news for millions of Russians and closely supports the Kremlin line.

A lady put up a banner that proclaimed in both English and Russian: “THERE IS NO WAR. Stop the war. Don’t fall for propaganda. They’re deceiving you here.”

For many seconds, the protester could be seen and heard until the station turned to a new broadcast and she was no longer visible.
