Sunday marked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s first public trip outside the Kyiv region since the beginning of Russia’s invasion on February 24. He visited frontline troops in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

According to the website of the President’s office, he told the soldiers, “You risk your lives for us all and for our country,” before presenting them with commendations and presents.

Andriy Yermak, the chief of staff for President Zelenskiy, posted on the Telegram app that the president had also visited Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine.

Yermak reported that Zelenskiy examined devastated residential buildings, stressing that bomb shelters were required for their reconstruction.

In addition, the president’s chief of staff stated that 31% of the Kharkiv region’s territory was now held by Russia and 5% had been reclaimed by Ukraine after being captured previously.
