British prosecutors announced on Wednesday that former Hollywood film mogul Harvey Weinstein will be charged with two counts of sexual assault against a woman from 26 years ago.

“Charges have been authorised against 70-year-old Harvey Weinstein,” said Rosemary Ainslie, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s (CPS) Special Crime Division, following a review of the evidence acquired by the Metropolitan Police throughout their investigation.

Harvey Weinstein spokesperson had no quick comment.

The CPS stated that the alleged attack occurred in London in August 1996. The Metropolitan Police of London stated that the accusation involved a woman in her fifties.

Harvey Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year jail term in the United States for abusing former production assistant Mimi Haleyi and raping former aspiring actor Jessica Mann in 2020.

The conviction was upheld by a New York court of appeals last week.

The verdict was considered a turning point in the #MeToo movement, in which dozens of women accused influential men of sexual misconduct. Many regard the allegations against Weinstein that appeared in 2017 as the movement’s impetus.

Ainslie stated, “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all parties that criminal proceedings against the defendant are ongoing and that he is entitled to a fair trial.”
