A “fanatical Islamist” inspired by Islamic State was sentenced to life in jail on Wednesday for knifing senior British legislator David Amess to death in a frenzied attack in a church where he was meeting constituents. According to Sky News,
Last October, Ali Harbi Ali, a British citizen and son of a former media aide to a Somali prime minister, repeatedly stabbed Amess in retaliation for the lawmaker’s support for airstrikes on Syria.
According to Sky News, Ali was given a life sentence, which means the court did not set a minimum sentence and he will never be considered for parole.
Ali was convicted guilty of murder and terrorist preparation on Monday at London’s Old Bailey court after a jury deliberated for less than half an hour.
