Julian Assange is wanted by U.S. authorities on 18 charges, including a charge of espionage, related to WikiLeaks’ revelation of massive troves of sensitive U.S. military papers and diplomatic cables, which, according to Washington, endangered lives.

His supporters assert that he is an anti-establishment hero who has been persecuted for exposing U.S. misconduct in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and that his trial is a politically motivated attack on media and free speech.

His wife Stella stated that Julian Assange will file an appeal once the UK Home Office authorised his extradition.

“In this case, the UK courts have not determined that Mr. Assange’s extradition would be harsh, unfair, or an abuse of process,” the Home Office said in a statement.

“Nor have they determined that extradition would be incompatible with his human rights, including his right to a fair trial and to freedom of speech, and that he will be treated correctly in the United States, especially with regard to his health,”

Initially, a UK court determined that Julian Assange should not be deported because, due to his mental health, he would be at risk of committing suicide if convicted and incarcerated in a high security facility.

On appeal, however, the conviction was overturned after the United States provided a package of guarantees, including a promise that he may be sent to Australia to complete any term.

Patel’s judgement does not signal the end of Assange’s legal battle, which has been ongoing for almost a decade and might continue for many more months.

He may file an appeal with London’s High Court, which must approve any challenge. He may finally attempt to take his case to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. If the appeal is denied, however, Assange must be extradited within 28 days.
