A United States diplomat was evacuated by helicopter from the U.S. embassy in Kabul as Taliban insurgents entered the Afghan capital on Sunday, an interior ministry official said.
According to the senior official, the Taliban are coming in “from all sides”.
According to a tweet from the Afghan Presidential palace, firing was heard around Kabul but security forces, in coordination with international partners, had control of the city.
The diplomats had been transported from the embassy to the airport in the fortified district of Wazir Akbar Khan, U.S. officials said. Following the Taliban’s lightning advances, more American troops were being sent to help with the evacuations.
