According to the governor of Sevastopol, a senior naval officer from Russia’s Black Sea Fleet was killed in Ukraine on Sunday.
Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev announced on Telegram that Post-Captain Andrei Paliy, the fleet’s deputy commander, perished during battle in the eastern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.
A request for response from the Russian navy was not returned.
On the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow acquired from Ukraine in 2014, sits Sevastopol, a significant base of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.
