Saturday morning’s attack on a Sikh temple in the Afghan capital Kabul resulted in at least two injuries, according to officials.

“There were perhaps thirty individuals in the temple. We do not know how many are alive and how many are deceased. We don’t know what to do because the Taliban won’t let us into the building “the temple administrator, Gornam Singh, stated.

A Taliban spokesman for the interior stated that two were hurt as terrorists attempted to drive an explosives-laden vehicle into the area. He stated that the car exploded before reaching its intended target and that Taliban authorities were protecting the area.

It was first unclear who was responsible for the explosion.

Tolo, a local television station, aired footage depicting dense grey smoke billowing from the area.

Since assuming control in August, Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers claim to have secured the country, but international authorities and analysts warn of the possibility of a revival of violence. Multiple incidents have occurred in recent months, with Islamic State claiming responsibility for some of them.

Sikhs are a tiny religious minority in predominantly Muslim Afghanistan, with approximately 300 family members prior to the Taliban’s takeover. According to community members and media accounts, many had fled the nation in the aftermath of the coup.

In Afghanistan, the Sikh minority, like other religious minorities, has been a constant target of violence. In 2020, 25 people were killed in an attack claimed by the Islamic State on another temple in Kabul.

The foreign ministry of India expressed “grave concern” over news of the incident. Arindam Bagchi, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, said in a statement, “We are actively following the situation and awaiting further details on the unfolding events.”

According to police, Friday’s explosion in a mosque in the northern city of Kunduz claimed one life and injured two others.
