Yoruba nation protesters have defied the heavy police presence to demonstrate in the Ojota area of Lagos State.
Police and the Army had taken over the rally venue in the early hours of the morning, but protesters later stormed it.
The heavily armed security operatives, however, resisted.
As a result, tensions in Ojota heightened when the police fired teargas canisters.
Many shop owners closed their doors for fear of being caught in the melee.
Police also arrested some protesters, according to our correspondent.
